Tent Mission

Tent Missions are now a mainstay in the life and work of People With A Mission Ministries (PWAMM) as a principal method of outreach in promoting the gospel of Jesus Christ in communities all over Scotland.

We take a 250-seater marquee in to towns, villages or housing estates where the people are not inclined to come to church to hear the life-transforming message.

If the people will not come to church, we will bring the church to them. The vision for this ministry was birthed in 2003. When the young people in the fellowship were discussing their outreach programme, there was a strong interest in organising a tent mission in Perth. The idea was obviously inspired, as the rest of the fellowship caught hold of the vision for this method of reaching out into the community – taking God’s power and presence back to where the people are.

The idea was obviously inspired, as the rest of the fellowship caught hold of the visionWhat started out as an expected one-off mission has grown to become an extensive ministry in itself. The original thought was to hire or borrow a tent to conduct a week-long mission. There was a special offering taken up from the congregation – which provided sufficient funds to purchase a brand new fixed-frame marquee, plus a generator, heating system, and vehicle to transport the required equipment.

Many churches throughout the land have caught on to the idea of using Tent Missions as a method of taking the Gospel into the heart of their community. From the Isle of Skye to Kirriemuir, from Blairgowrie to Dunfermline, the tent has been used mightily by God to bring souls to salvation. At one mission in Carluke in 2006, over 100 people came to a living faith in the Lord Jesus.

Missions usually last for one week. An evangelistic rally is held every evening, normally with a programme for children earlier in the day. One lunchtime during the mission, there is a “Tea in the Marquee” for senior citizens. They are invited in by local churches from nursing homes and sheltered housing in the area for an afternoon of song, testimony, drama and preaching, followed by afternoon tea.

There can also be a film night which is either on a Friday or Saturday night, which transforms the marquee into a cinema, for the showing of a well-made contemporary film with a strong Christian message.

Taking God’s power and presence back to where the people areThere may also be a fun day on the Saturday afternoon, which includes an inflatable slide, bouncy castles, face painting, games for local children and a barbeque. It is a great way of building bridges with the local people, as well as a great afternoon of fun for whole families.

The normal format for the evening rallies is a time of praise, mixed with local people testifying to how Jesus Christ has changed their lives. There may be a musical item from the Upper Room Singers, or a sketch by Burning Issues. Finally, the gospel message is preached, either by one of the PWAMM preaching team, or by a guest speaker.
